Accessible design for automated banking machines
This is the second edition of CSA B651.1, Accessible design for automated banking machines. It supersedes the first edition published in 2001 under the title Barrier-Free Design for Automated Banking Machines.
This new edition of CSA B651.1 includes the following revisions:
(a) inclusion of Update 3, issued in May 2004;
(b) addition of Clause 18.104.22.168, dealing with keypad privacy shields;
(c) expansion of Clause 9.5, dealing with audio output requirements; and
(d) removal of built environment requirements not specific to ABMs, which can be found in CAN/CSA-B651.
This Standard is intended to be used in association with CAN/CSA-B651.
The requirements of this Standard are minimum requirements. This Standard does not have the force of law unless mandated by legislation or referenced in the regulations of the authority having jurisdiction. The user is advised to contact the local authority having jurisdiction in order to determine to what extent this Standard is referenced.
This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Accessible Design for Automated Banking Machines, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Accessible Design and the Strategic Steering Committee on Community Safety and Well-Being, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee.
This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.
This Standard specifies accessibility requirements for automated
banking machines (ABMs) and ABM sites.
Note: While the purpose of this Standard is to make ABMs or their environment more accessible, there might be some people with disabilities who have requirements beyond the scope of this Standard.
This Standard specifies technical requirements applicable to the
design and manufacture of
(a) wall-mounted ABMs;
(b) stand-alone ABMs; and
(c) ABM sites.
This Standard does not apply to drive-through ABMs.
This Standard does not specify the application of technical requirements.
Note: The extent to which technical requirements are applied is the responsibility of others, such as the authority having jurisdiction.
In CSA Standards, shall is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; should is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; may is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard; and can is used to express possibility or capability. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
This Standard is written in SI (metric) units and, where converted from imperial units, the units have been rounded off with respect to critical dimension.
