Preface
This Standard, W59.1, is a new edition of CSA Standard.W59, Standard Specification for Welding of Bridges, Buildings and Machinery (Metallic Electric-Arc Process) and supersedes previous editions Issued in 1940 and 1946. As explained in the Foreword, both the title and designation of the Standard have been changed according to a long-range plan for future revision and more extensive coverage of the subject matter.
In the course of preparing this new edition, extensive use was made of material originally prepared by the American Welding Society and the British Standards Institution. Grateful acknowledgement is extended to both organizations for permission to use their material.
This Standard was prepared by the Committee on Welding of Bridges, Buildings and Machinery under the jurisdiction of the Sectional Committee on Structures, and more recently the Sectional Committee on Welding, and was formally approved by these Committees and the CSA Standards Review Board.
Scope
1.1
This Standard covers only the general welding requirements as they commonly apply to statically loaded steel structures welded by metal-arc welding processes. It is to be used in conjunction with any complementary Standards issued under the WS9 Series dealing with a particular type of steel structure and also any codes or specifications prescribing the design and construction of the steel structure.
1.2
It is not intended to apply to pressure vessels or to interfere with the use of such special codes as Floyd’s, Bureau of Aeronautics, American Petroleum Institute, etc.

Where reference is made to other publications, such references shall be considered to refer to the latest edition approved by the organization issuing that publication.
