This is the second edition of CAN/CSA-ISO 14040, Environmental management - Life cycle assessment - Principles and framework, which is an adoption without modification of the identically titled ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Standard 14040 (second edition, 2006-07-01). It supersedes the previous edition, published in 1997 as CAN/CSA-ISO 14040 (adopted ISO 14040:1997).
This Standard also supersedes the following CSA Standards:
(a) CAN/CSA-ISO 14041-98, Environmental management — Life cycle assessment — Goal and scope definition and inventory analysis (adopted ISO 14041:1998);
(b) CAN/CSA-ISO 14042-00, Environmental management — Life cycle assessment — Life cycle impact assessment (adopted ISO 14042:2000); and
(c) CAN/CSA-ISO 14043-00, Environmental management — Life cycle assessment — Life cycle interpretation (adopted ISO 14043:2000).
This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.
Scope
This International Standard describes the principles and framework for life cycle assessment (LCA) including
a) the goal and scope definition of the LCA
b) the life cycle inventory analysis (LCI) phase
c) the life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) phase
d) the life cycle interpretation phase
e) reporting and critical review of the LCA
f) limitations of the LCA
g) relationship between the LCA phases, and
h) conditions for use of value choices and optional elements.
This International Standard covers life cycle assessment (LCA) studies and life cycle inventory (LCI) studies. It does not describe the LCA technique in detail, nor does it specify methodologies for the individual phases of the LCA.
The intended application of LCA or LCI results is considered during the goal and scope definition, but the application itself is outside the scope of this International Standard.
