CSA 3.8-99 (R2005)
Gas-fired equipment for drying farm crops
Product Details
Preface
This is the fifth edition of CSA Standard 3.8, Gas-Fired Equipment for Drying Farm Crops. It supersedes the previous editions, published by the Canadian Gas Association under the designation CAN/CGA-3.8 in 1986, 1977, 1972, and 1968. This Standard is published to serve as a stand-alone document that can be referenced by Canadian jurisdictions. There is no equivalent standard available in the United States.
This Standard provides requirements for the construction and performance of direct gas-fired equipment for drying farm crops. The equipment described in this Standard is fired by either natural gas or propane in the liquid or gas phase, having a nominal input up to and including 10 000 000 Btuh (3000 kW).
This Standard includes tests for the following performance criteria for crop dryers: combustion, burner operating characteristics, flame safety - delayed ignition, automatic pilots, operating temperatures, manifold and control assembly capacity, electrical tests, pilots, direct spark ignition, safety limiting devices, and units for outdoor installation. These tests are to be performed under anticipated normal operating conditions, as well as anticipated abnormal operating conditions.
Safe and satisfactory operation of a farm crop dryer depends to a great extend upon its proper installation, use, and maintenance. It should be installed, as applicable, in accordance with CAN/CGA-B149.1, Natural Gas Installation Code, or CAN/CGA-B149.2, Propane Installation Code, as well as manufacturers' installation instructions.
This Standard provides SI (metric) equivalents to customary American units, the purpose being to allow the Standard to be used in SI (metric) units. SI (metric) equivalents may be approximate. Customary American units are used to express the requirements.
This Standard was prepared under the jurisdiction of the CGA 3.8 Standards Committee on Gas-Fired Equipment for Drying Farm Crops and has been approved by the Interprovincial Gas Advisory Council.
Scope
1.1
This Standard applies to direct gas-fired equipment for drying farm crops that is constructed of noncombustible materials with nominal inputs up to and including 10 000 000 Btuh (3000 kW).
1.2
Dryers with inputs above 10 000 000 Btuh (3000 kW) will be investigated to the intent of this Standard, although additional requirements may also apply.
1.3
This Standard applies to dryers fired with natural gas or propane in the liquid or vapour phase.
