Face Protectors for Ringette Players

Ringette is a sport often referred to as the fastest game on ice. Like any sport requiring protective equipment, the safety and protection of players is the main priority. Z262.5 defines both mandatory and minimum requirements for manufacturing and testing of face protectors for ringette players. Defining acceptable materials used in assembly, design and finish, areas of coverage, optical requirements, stability, impact resistance, penetration resistance, strength and durability, labels, tags, and markings intended to help reduce the frequency and severity of eye and face injuries.
Highlights of Z262.5:
- Provides guidelines for impact and penetration resistance, strength and durability requirements.
- Establishes mandatory, and minimum requirements for materials used in the production, assembly, design and finish, areas of coverage, optical requirements, stability, impact resistance, penetration resistance, strength and durability; and labels, tags, and markings.
- Defines both type (A) and (B) of face protectors; (A) face protector intended for use by persons older than 10 years of age; and (B) face protectors intended for use by persons 10 years of age or younger.

Scope
1.1
This Standard applies to face protectors intended for use in ringette. The objective of this Standard is to reduce the risk of injuries to the face and eyes of ringette players through the use of a face protector.
1.2
Ringette is a sport with intrinsic hazards. Participation in ringette implies the acceptance of some risk of injury. Use of a face protector certified under this Standard will not prevent all injuries. When used as intended and in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, the use of a face protector certified under this Standard may reduce the frequency and severity of injuries to the face and eyes.

Two types of face protectors, as defined in Clause 2.1, are considered under this Standard:
(a) Type A: a face protector intended for use by persons older than 10 years of age; and
(b) Type B: a face protector intended for use by persons 10 years of age or younger.
1.4
This Standard establishes certain mandatory, minimum requirements for ringette face protectors in the following areas:
(a) materials used in fabrication;
(b) assembly, design, and finish;
(c) areas of coverage;
(d) optical requirements;
(e) stability
(f) impact resistance;
(g) penetration resistance
(h) strength and durability
(i) labels, tags, and markings.
