General guidelines

What is a request for interpretation?
An interpretation is a written clarification of the meaning of a provision of a CSA standard, provided by the responsible Technical Committee in response to a written request for an interpretation.

Who can submit a request for interpretation?
Requests for interpretation of CSA Group standards may be submitted by anyone.

When can I submit a request for interpretation?
Requests for interpretation of CSA Group standards may be submitted at any time.

Are there any restrictions or other considerations?
Requests for interpretation cannot be considered if the matter is known to be related to pending or ongoing litigation or to be before the courts or an administrative tribunal. In addition, requests for interpretation of a standard referenced in legislation or used for regulatory purposes should be based on the literal text and not the intent. In all cases, if there appears to be a difference between the literal text and the intent, an amendment to the CSA standard should be considered as soon as possible.

Following a preliminary check by CSA staff, a request for interpretation that meets the criteria for a formal response will be forwarded to the applicable Technical Committee for review. A response will be issued and published on the Formal Interpretations web page once the committee has reviewed and balloted the request, which may require some time.

What will happen after I submit my request for interpretation?
The request for interpretation that meets criteria for a formal response will go through the following procedure:
CSA Project Manager Review > Technical Committee Review > Technical Committee Ballot > Ballot Disposition > Response
