Towards a sustainable future

Supporting Canada’s sustainable development strategy

In September 2015, Canada and all other United Nations (UN) General Assembly member countries adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Agenda outlines 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aiming to “achieve a better and more sustainable future for all people and the world by 2030.” Outlining specific targets and indicators for each SDG, the 2030 Agenda provides a framework guiding responsible global economic, environmental, social, and governance development.

The outcome-oriented SDGs encourage flexibility in the approaches to achieve them, as well as contributions from a broad and diverse group of actors around the world.

CSA Group standards can support SDG efforts at all levels of government and help accelerate progress towards shaping a sustainable future as outlined in Canada’s 2030 Agenda National Strategy.

How governments can use standards as tools to help achieve the SDGs

Credible tools for organizations

Standards help industry organizations achieve their SDGs objectives

Many public and private organizations are adopting policies and operational processes to incorporate sustainable development principles.

CSA Group standards provide a credible tool to help organizations implement actions towards achieving the SDGs. Standards can also provide benchmarks for monitoring and reporting the effectiveness of SDG implementation.

CSA Standards and the SDGs

Research helps link standards to specific SDG targets

A preliminary assessment revealed that 80% of CSA Group’s own standards support the UN SDGs. Building on this work, CSA Group has conducted comprehensive multi-disciplinary research to develop a robust and transparent methodology for mapping standards to the SDGs at target or indicator levels. This initiative aims to demonstrate how organizations, governments, and policymakers can use CSA Group standards as an effective tool in developing and implementing their SDG strategies.

Find standards supporting a particular SDG or relating to an area you are interested in, or search for a specific standard to learn which SDG targets it helps address.

Note that not all CSA Standards have completed the mapping process and the data base is being continually updated with further results
