CSA International and Dell Announce a Voluntary Recall of Notebook Computer Batteries

In cooperation with CSA International, Dell Inc., of Round Rock, Texas is voluntarily recalling approximately 95,000 Dell-branded lithium-ion battery packs with cells manufactured by Sony and sold to customers in Canada between April 1, 2004 through July 18, 2006. In rare conditions, it is possible for the batteries to overheat, posing a fire hazard.

Dell has received six reports of batteries overheating, resulting in property damage to furniture and personal effects. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled batteries were sold with the following Dell notebook computers:

  •     Latitude™ D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810;
  •     Inspiron™ 500M, 510M, 600M, 700M, 710M, 6000, 6400, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, E1505;
  •     XPS,™ XPS Gen2, XPS M170 and XPS M1710;
  •     and Dell Precision™ M20, M60, M70 and M90 mobile workstations.

The batteries were also sold separately, including as secondary batteries and in response to service calls as replacements. The batteries insert into the battery bay located on the underside of the notebook. “Dell” and one of the following are printed on the batteries: “Made in Japan” or “Made in China” or “Battery Cell Made in Japan Assembled in China.” The identification number for each battery appears on a white sticker. Customers should have this number available when they contact Dell to determine if their battery is part of the recall.

Customers should contact Dell immediately to determine if their notebook computer battery is part of this recall. If it is, customers should immediately stop using the battery as a power source for their notebook computer. Dell will provide a free replacement battery. Customers can continue to use their notebook computer safely by turning the system off, ejecting the battery, and using the AC adapter and power cords to power the system unit a replacement battery is received.
