CSA Group Selected to Manage Alberta Government’s Carbon Registries

CSA Group, a leading standards development organization and a global provider of testing and certification services, is pleased to announce that it has been selected as the service provider for Alberta government’s Emissions Offset Registry and Emission Performance Credits Registry. These two greenhouse gas (GHG) registries are responsible for the management of all carbon offset units used by facilities to meet Alberta’s longstanding Specified Gas Emitters Regulation.

Since July 1, 2007, Alberta requires facilities that emit more than 100,000 tonnes of GHG to reduce emissions intensity by 12 per cent per year off an established baseline period typically 2003-2005. CSA Group has been managing the carbon offset credits and emission performance credits used under this regulation since 2007. By continuing to manage these important GHG registries for Alberta, CSA Group will ensure continuity of service for current and future clients. Under the new term, CSA Group will also implement key process improvement steps to streamline project registration and improve account management for clients.

“Being awarded the continued management of Alberta’s GHG registries is an exciting opportunity for CSA Group to contribute to a more sustainable future,” said Gianluca Arcari, Executive Director, Standards and Vice President, CSA Group. “CSA Group is a leader in GHG management in Canada, and we hope to be able to expand our services and provide our expertise in other jurisdictions as new environmental initiatives come into effect”.

In order to be compliant with Alberta’s GHG regulations, facilities have the option to purchase Alberta-based carbon offset credits, emission performance credits or to pay into the Climate Change and Emissions Management Fund. Alberta’s regulation has led to the development and registration of 172 GHG offset projects, covering 33 GHG protocol areas. Since 2007, 32.1 million GHG offset credits have been serialized by CSA Group on the Alberta Emissions Offset Registry, and 17.2 million Emission Performance Credits have been issued by the government under the CSA Group registry.

In addition to the Alberta GHG registries, CSA Group has an environmental product declaration (EPD) registry, GHG inventory-based registries and voluntary-based GHG project registries which includes a CSA Registered Carbon Neutral Program. EPDs provide objective, verifiable environmental information on products or services to allow a direct comparison of competing products. GHG registries provide a way to recognize an organization’s commitment to measure and manage its GHG management results, and publicly report on its environmental and sustainability initiatives.
