CSA Group Releases Updated B149 Code Series to Advance Safety in Natural Gas and Propane Industries

New Series reflects advancements in technology, industry practices, and safety requirements

Toronto, ON, March 19, 2025 – Nearly two-thirds of Canadians, along with many businesses, rely on natural gas for space and water heating. Addressing the safe handling and storage of natural gas and propane, as well as the proper installation of appliances and equipment that use these fuels, is essential.

CSA Group has released the updated B149 Code Series, a comprehensive suite of codes guiding the safe design, installation, operation, and maintenance of natural gas, biogas, and propane systems across Canada. This latest edition reflects advancements in technology, industry practices, and safety requirements to address evolving needs in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

Among the updated codes is CSA B149.1, Natural gas and propane installation code. First published in 1958, this code provides detailed requirements for the installation operation of natural gas and propane equipment, including appliances, piping systems, and venting components. As a major component of the natural gas safety system in Canada, CSA B149.1 is incorporated by reference into regulations by all provinces and territories.

Key updates introduced in the 17th edition of CSA B149.1 include:

  • Updating bonding requirements to align with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I
  • Updating permissions for the use of press-connect fittings
  • Special considerations for natural gas and propane installations in industrial applications
  • Preparing for and addressing hydrogen-natural gas blends when the appropriate product standards are complete
  • Adding specific requirements for rating plates and odorization of hydrogen-natural gas blends

Included with the purchase of the 2025 edition of CSA B149.1, CSA Group’s self-paced online training provides a comprehensive overview of the latest code changes. This training is designed to help users quickly understand and apply the updates in their daily operations.

The B149 Code Series is updated every five years and is essential for supporting public safety and advancing industry practices in Canada. Other codes in the series, which have also been updated, include:

“The B149 Code Series is foundational to the safety and reliability of Canada’s natural gas and propane industries,” said Brent Hartman, Director of Fuels and Transportation Standards at CSA Group. “These updates provide professionals and organizations with the tools they need to address modern challenges and deliver safe, efficient energy solutions.”

CSA Group acknowledges that aspects of the code development process were made possible, in part, by the financial support of Natural Resources Canada.
