CSA Group Offers Safety Tips for Outdoor Activities on International Children’s Day

June 1 is the International Children’s Day and an excellent time to enjoy some outdoor activities like swimming, camping or biking around city. CSA Group, a leading standards development organization and global provider of testing and certification services, offers some safety tips to help you enjoy the holiday safely.

Enjoy family biking safely

Cyclists should always wear a certified bike helmet. When buying a helmet keep the following in mind:

  1. Certification markings: Look for the certification mark of an accredited certification & testing organization. That indicates that the helmet has been tested and certified to the requirements of the applicable standard for cycling helmets.
  2. Fit: Proper fit is essential for safety. Try helmets on before purchasing to make sure you pick one that fits comfortably and snugly.
  3. Stability: When the straps and comfort pads are adjusted, the helmet should not move forward, backward or come off. It should sit level on the head and extend down to about 3-cm above the eyebrows.
  4. Ventilation: Look for vents that allow heat to escape, providing coolness and perspiration control.
  5. Attachment system: Front and rear straps should meet just below each ear when tightly adjusted. The chin straps should be snug without pinching.
  6. Eye care: Visors provide cyclists with additional protection from the sun and rain.
  7. Visibility: Brightly colored helmets and reflective strips make the rider more visible in traffic.
  8. Replacement: Bike helmets act as shock absorbers, protecting the head by cushioning impact. The helmet is not designed for multiple impacts. Replace a helmet after it has been in a crash.

Camping and cooking in the great outdoors:

  1. Fresh air. To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, fuel-burning equipment such as camping stoves and heaters should only be used in well-ventilated areas.
  2. Hot is not cool. Keep loose, flammable clothing away from open flames and carefully monitor children and pets around stoves and lanterns. Before packing up equipment, make sure it is completely turned off and cool to the touch.
  3. Three meters from the tent. Fuel-burning camping equipment such as stoves, lanterns and outdoor cookers should only be lighted outdoors and at least three meters from tents, combustible materials and vehicles. Never light a stove or lantern indoors or in a tent or vehicle. Before use, carefully inspect parts for leaks, blockages or damage.

Cool off in the swimming pool

To keep safe while swimming:

  1. Stay afloat. Not everyone can swim, so make sure appropriate floatation devices are available. Keep a life jacket and other safety flotation devices close to the pool so that everyone can have fun and stay safe.
  2. Lock-in safety measures. Erecting a pool-side fence will prevent young children from gaining access to pools without designated supervision present.
  3. Look for the certification mark. Ensure that all electrical pool parts (lights, pumps, heaters, etc.) are properly certified by an organization such as CSA Group. Hot tubs and whirlpools should also be certified.
