CSA Group Breaks Ground On New Cleveland Laboratory To Meet Increased Demand In Testing Of Explosive Atmosphere Gas Detection Instruments

CSA Group, a leading standards development organization and a global provider of product testing and certification services today broke ground on a new testing laboratory on its grounds in Cleveland, Ohio to accommodate increased demand for safety and performance testing of gas detection instruments used in explosive atmospheres.

In June of this year, CSA Group announced a new automated explosive atmospheres laboratory located at its Cleveland facility that is equipped to provide full-service explosion-proof and flameproof testing to the applicable requirements of Canadian, U.S., IECEx, and ATEX standards. Today’s announcement will see an additional 4,000 sq feet added to that laboratory to accommodate safety and performance testing of gas detection instruments for explosive gases, doubling the CSA Group’s global testing capacity for gas-detection projects per year.

“This new addition will allow CSA Group to provide a full complement of explosive atmosphere testing capabilities right here in Cleveland,” says Richard Weiser, Vice President, U.S. and Mexico Region, CSA Group. “When combined with our current global gas detection instrument testing capacity, this new lab will double our testing capabilities in this sector and allow us to shorten project turn-around times for our clients and improve their speed to market.”

Conducted in a controlled, secure laboratory environment, the testing of these instruments are carried out in accordance with the requirements in the applicable standards and is a long-term process. The instruments are subjected to a number of conditions including various levels of temperature, humidity, voltage variations and interruptions, and exposure to various gas mixtures over time periods ranging from seconds to weeks. The testing protocols for these instruments also require shock and vibration testing along with electromagnetic compatibility testing.

The new expansion is estimated to be completed in 2014 and will generate approximately $450,000 in local construction revenue. Once completed, the fundamental design goal of CSA Group’s new, automated, state-of-the-art explosives atmosphere testing laboratory is to facilitate simultaneous and independent testing of several gas detection instruments, each using separate test protocols specifically tailored to the unique equipment and the manufacturer’s needs, each individually controlled and continuously monitored; fully autonomous of testing being performed on other instruments undergoing testing in the lab at the same time.

With dedicated and accredited testing laboratories in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, CSA Group is continuously increasing its capacity to meet the growing needs of global clients seeking highly specialized and sophisticated explosive atmosphere testing services.
