Overview:
A gas-fired appliance has a great effect on the building and occupants beyond the supply of space heating, hot water, cooking heat, or clothes drying. The appliance is also greatly affected by the building. This unit explores the relationship between our appliances and the building, including the occupants. To truly understand how a heating system works, we have to understand how the building works as a system.
Our customers expect more from us than just satisfying their needs and wants for space heat, hot water, etc. Customer satisfaction depends on the appliance operating safely, reliably, efficiently, and effectively without causing any adverse effects to health, odours, noise, or the building structure.
To understand and address all these needs and wants, we have to examine how the building and the appliance are interrelated. From this larger perspective we will be able to identify and respond to a number of appliance problems and customer complaints that have long plagued the heating industry. As a result, our work efficiency will increase along with customer satisfaction.
As a gas technician/fitter, it is important that you understand the principles of heat, moisture, air flow, and demands for air, and how they interact with past and present construction standards and with gas-fired appliances. This understanding will allow you to identify, prevent, and troubleshoot problems that have more to do with the building system than with gas-fired appliances.
