Preface
This is the first edition of CSA Standard CAN3-N285.0, General Requirements for Pressure-Retaining Systems and Components in CANDU Nuclear Power Plants, and supersedes, in conjunction with the new edition of N285.1 (see below), the preliminary Standard N285.1-1975, General and Construction Requirements for CANDU Nuclear Power Plant Components.
This Standard is one in a series intended to provide uniform rules for the design, fabrication, and installation of pressure-retaining systems and components in CANDU nuclear power plants. The series supplements the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, insofar as it relates to nuclear power plants, with requirements that are particularly applicable to nuclear power plants located in Canada.
The specific objectives of the series are:
(a) To establish rules relating to authorization, approval, and acceptance where such rules are different from those specified in the ASME Code;
(b) To specify requirements for materials and rules for the design, fabrication, installation, examination, inspection, testing, and repair of pressure-retaining systems and components, when such systems and components are not within the scope of the ASME Code;
(c) To establish rules for classifying systems and components based on principles and criteria consistent with the Canadian safety philosophy, as promulgated by the Atomic Energy Control Board;
(d). To establish rules for the periodic inspection of CANDU nuclear power plants;
(e) To make provision for interpretation of the rules contained by the Standards of this series.
The series envisaged will consist of the following CSA Standards:
CAN3-N285.0, General Requirements for Pressure-Retaining Systems and Components in CANDU Nuclear Power Plants;
CAN3-N285.1, Requirements for Class 1, 2, and 3 Pressure-Retaining Systems and Components in CANDU Nuclear Power Plants;
CAN3-N285.2, Requirements for Class Special Pressure-Retaining Components in CANDU Nuclear Power Plants;
CAN3-N285.3, Requirements for Containment Systems and Components in CANDU Nuclear Power Plants;
N285.4, Periodic Inspection of CANDU Nuclear Power Plant Components;
CAN3-N285.5, Periodic Inspection of CANDU Nuclear Power Plant Containment Appurtenances;
CAN3-N285.6, Materials for Components in CANDU Nuclear Power Plants.
Users of this Standard are reminded that the design, fabrication, installation, commissioning, and operation of nuclear facilities in Canada are subject to the provisions of the Atomic Energy Control Act and Regulations. Thus, requirements additional to those specified in this Standard may be imposed by the Atomic Energy Control Board.
This Standard references CSA or other standards that are still in the preparation stage (i.e., not issued) or, if issued, not adopted by the regulatory authority. In the latter case, the Standard in current use will be generally applicable; however, the Committee may be approached for an interpretation, although it must be realized that the regulatory authority has the final ruling.
Scope
1.1
This Standard specifies the general requirements for the design, fabrication, and installation of pressure-retaining systems and components in CANDU nuclear power plants.
1.2
This Standard, to the extent specified herein, applies to all pressure-retaining systems and components in a nuclear power plant.
1.3
This Standard includes requirements of a regulatory nature that are commonly applied by the regulatory authorities in implementing legislative requirements.
