Preface
This is the first edition of CSA Standard CAN3-A23.3-M, Code for the Design of Concrete Structures for Buildings, written in SI units. It is a slightly revised, metric version of CSA Standard A23.3-1973 and these Standards are intended to coexist.
CSA Standard CAN3-A23.3-M is intended for use in carrying out design in metric units and is to be used in conjunction with CSA Standards CAN3-A23.1-M, Concrete Materials and Methods of Concrete Construction, and CAN3-A23.4-M, Precast Concrete-Materials and Construction. For designs in Imperial units CSA Standards A23.3-1973 (with Supplement No. 1-1977), A23.1-1973 and A197-1968 should be used.
Scope
1.1
General
This Standard applies to the design of building structures of reinforced (prestressed or non-prestressed) concrete.
1.2
Special Structures
For special structures such as' arches, tanks, reservoirs, grain elevators, blast-resistant structures and chimneys, and for plain concrete, the provisions of this Standard shall govern so far as they are applicable.
1.3 Fire Resistance
The National Building Code of Canada provides that the constituent elements of certain building structures are required to have a specified fire resistance rating. The rules for establishing fire resistance ratings are given in the Code, which makes reference to Supplement No.2, of the National Building Code of Canada, Fire Performance Ratings. Supplement No.2 assigns fire resistance ratings to certain concrete walls, floors, roofs, columns and beams designed in accordance with this ·Standard. The fire resistance rating that Supplement No.2 may assign to a specific concrete assembly depends upon the type of concrete from which the assembly is constructed, the dimensions of the assembly, the type of reinforcement used, its concrete cover and other factors. Users of this Standard shall refer to the provisions of the National Building Code of Canada, Part 3 for guidance as to the fire resistance rating, if any, which may be assigned to building structures designed in accordance with this Standard.
