Overview
The ORNAC Standards, Guidelines, and Position Statements for Registered Nurses, 16th edition – 2023 serves as a guide and reference for perioperative nurses, health care facilities providing care to surgical patients, and other professional associations. This semi-annual compendium was developed and reviewed by perioperative nurses across Canada and reflects current practice, research, and review of medical/surgical/nursing literature. The volunteer members of the ORNAC Standards Committee review/revise modules on a continuous basis within a two-year timeframe. The Standards are available in both English and French.
A record of changes since the 13th edition and a full table of contents now appear at the beginning. CNA competencies are incorporated. Updates were made to lasers, pressure injury, patient positioning, psychological hazards, and surgical count management. Portable electronic devices are included for the first time. Consideration work was done to improve response management in the perioperative setting. Content is reorganized to flow better and with enhanced figures and tables.
Thank you to the committee members who worked diligently on the 16th edition of the Standards.
