Samsung Range Receives First Ever Sustainability Certificate

Flexible design of the Samsung Flex DuoTM Oven offers energy-efficient cooking options

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., today announced that the Samsung Slide-In Electric Range with Flex DuoTM Oven (NE58F9710WS) received the Sustainable Product Certificate from CSA Group (Canadian Standards Association), a global provider of testing and certification services and a leading standards development organization.

CSA Group’s ‘Sustainable Product Certificate’ is selectively given to a product after a thorough analysis and evaluation of its ability to comply with the six sustainability attributes: materials of concern; energy consumption; production and manufacturing management; product quality; disposal management; and, technological innovation. The certification is the first of its kind globally for cooking appliances, which traditionally are not considered energy efficient by nature. The Samsung range is the first oven worldwide to receive the recognition.

“Samsung knows that consumers’ cooking needs vary from day to day and month to month. Sometimes they require a full oven cavity, but more often they are cooking and baking smaller items for everyday meals,” said John Herrington, Senior Vice President, General Manager of Home Appliances, Samsung Electronics America. “By empowering consumers to customize their oven based on meal needs and only heat what is necessary, the range can consume less energy than traditional full-size ovens. Sustainability is an important focus for Samsung, so we are proud to be recognized for our innovation and will continue to develop environmentally friendly products not only for the U.S. market, but also across the globe.”

The versatile design of the Samsung Flex Duo Oven gives consumers the capacity of a full size oven with the flexibility to customize based on meal prep needs. Via the removable Smart Divider, the large 5.8 cu. ft. oven can be converted into two smaller cavities (2.4 cu. ft. and 3.3 cu. ft.) to suit any cooking need, all behind the streamlined look of one solid oven door. The range also features an expandable burner on the cooktop that can be tailored to fit any size pot, so consumers only heat what is needed.

First introduced in 2011, the Flex Duo Oven design gives consumers multiple cooking options: use the large oven cavity for big meals like the holiday turkey; insert the Smart Divider and simultaneously cook two different dishes in two separate compartments at different temperatures with little transfer of aroma and taste; or use only the small top compartment (which, according to Samsung research, 92 percent of Flex Duo users prefer).

On the cooktop, consumers have the flexibility to cook with different-sized pans simultaneously. Whether boiling water, melting chocolate or simmering sauce, there’s a burner for that: one triple (6”/9”/12”), three singles (6” and 7”) and one warming burner. The triple burner has three different sized heating elements in one, as well as bridge capability which creates an extra-large cooking surface for oversized pots and pans.

In 2015, Samsung will evolve its popular Flex Duo Oven Range with the introduction of Dual Door™. Samsung takes convenience and flexibility to a higher level with two doors that have been integrated into one to provide three cooking configurations to tackle any meal demand. An upper door gives access to a small top compartment; a full door opens to both the top and bottom compartments when the removable Smart Divider is in use, and offers access to the entire oven when the divider is not in use.

“We are pleased to provide services to companies that help get more sustainable, energy efficient products to the market,” said Claudia Chan, CSA Group Regional Vice President, North and South East Asia. “Our sustainability and energy efficiency verification programs are just one way CSA Group contributes to a more sustainable world.”
