Canadians’ use of alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs can affect their workplaces in a number of ways  including increasing the risk of workplace injury, absenteeism, diminished quality of work, strain on work relationships, and deterioration in employees’ physical, emotional, and mental health. These effects have direct costs to organizations in terms of productivity, accidents and insurance rates, and disability and injury claims as well as indirect consequences for workplace morale and culture. As a result, substance use has been an ongoing concern for employers and employees, unions, industry associations, insurance companies, health professionals, government policy-makers, and regulators.This research report aims to provide a summary of the research and practice-based evidence on workplace-related substance use, to identify best and emerging practices where available, and explores the role of a national standard solution on workplace substance use policies.
