Infection Prevention and Control in Health Care Facility Design
In 2011, in response to safety and cost concerns raised by health care professionals, governments and the public, CSA Group developed the standard, CSA Z8000 – Canadian Health Care Facilities. The standard included several features designed to help improve patient and staff outcomes at health care facilities (HCFs).For this research study, we specifically examined three features and whether HCFs with these features have seen a decrease in health care-associated infection (HAI) rates. The features examined include: the requirement for single patient rooms, dedicated provisions for human waste disposal; and the requirement for deeper and better designed hand hygiene sinks.
This report discusses existing literature on the subject, provides an overview of the existing patient safety surveillance programs in Canada, and explores how the requirements of the standard can contribute to reducing infection rates in health care facilities.
