Executive Summary

Building and fire codes or appliance standards limit the temperatures that the combustible materials that surround gas-burning appliances can reach when those appliances are in operation. These temperatures, approximately 90 to 117 °F (50 to 65 °C) above room temperature, are significantly lower than the ignition temperatures of the combustible materials themselves. Temperature limits in codes and standards appear to be aligned with findings from review of scientific literature on thermal degradation of such materials after long-term exposure.
