Executive Summary

Data on Canada’s age composition tell a clear and powerful story. Baby boomers are getting older, transitioning from the labour force to retirement, with a unique set of income security and health-related needs.

While the demographic reality is challenging, perhaps more difficult is the narrative it has sparked. The story goes like this. Older Canadians have little to contribute to society, and threaten to drain our finances and exhaust the country of our caregiving capacity.

The CSA Policy Pathways Conference: Aging Canada 2040 and this paper offer a different perspective, one that recognizes the opportunities of an aging population.
