North American Standards for EV Charging Stations
New CSA standards help pave the way for certification of electric vehicles in North America

The demand for EV charging stations in Canada has grown at a compound average rate of 46% annually for the past five years1. As more charging stations become available across the country, it became evident that there was no North American standard that covered all the components present in these systems.
This case study explores the standards and certification landscape related to different components of EV charging stations.
This case study covers the following topics:
- The rise of electric vehicles;
- The lack of standards for the components of EV charging stations; and
- New standards that could lead to certification programs.
