Intense rainfall or rapid snow melting, combined with aging water infrastructure, loss of natural infrastructure, and inadequate flood protection at the individual house level can lead to basement flooding. As extreme weather events become more frequent, the importance of protecting homes from flooding is growing. There are many steps homeowners can take to avoid costly home repairs and impacts on their safety, as well as physical and mental health.

The guideline CSA Z800-18 (R2023), Guideline on basement flood protection and risk reduction, published as a National Standard of Canada, outlines measures owners and dwellers of detached, semi-detached, and row houses can take to keep floodwaters away from structures and property and limit the damage in case of a flood event.
