Attend a seminar near you to learn how to use field evaluations for product safety compliance in the North American Market

Unique circumstances sometimes make it challenging, impractical, or even impossible for you to undergo the regular certification process. Demonstrating your product’s compliance to safety requirements through a field evaluation (FE) may be the solution.

Other manufacturers pursue field evaluations – or special inspections as they are referred to in Canada – for various reasons. Some of these reasons include a limited production run that would not justify the expense of a regular certification program, modified or repurposed equipment for use in the field, and emerging technology used in the product that does not fit within a current standard.

Perhaps the most relevant reason for you is that field evaluations are more practical for uncertified overseas equipment coming to North America. According to World’s Top Exports, exports from Asia totaled about US$6.390 trillion in 2017, a 1.7% increase since 2013, with an 11.5% year-over-year gain from 2016 to 2017.[1] For both Canada and the U.S., countries in Asia continue to be their top trading partners. To verify some of these products’ compliance with the applicable safety standards, a field evaluation may be necessary.

This one-time evaluation service is quick and efficient, and helps you get your products into North America when you need approval from local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). With over 20 years of field evaluation experience, CSA Group has extensive technical expertise in field evaluations and can help you identify, understand, and properly apply the applicable codes to help ensure project conformity with specific requirements. These include:

  • CSA B149.3 – Field Approval of Gas Fired Appliances
  • NPFA 791 – Recommended Practice and Procedures for Unlabeled Electrical Equipment Evaluation
  • SPE-1000 – Canadian Model Code for the Field Evaluation of Electrical Equipment
  • SPE-3000 – Model Code for the Field Evaluation of Medical Electrical Equipment and Systems

To help you decide on whether you should pursue a field evaluation – and what you need to prepare for it – we are hosting a roadshow in Asia where you can attend a seminar near you to learn more about the service. Our technical experts will provide an in-depth overview of U.S. and Canadian regulations and standards to help ensure your products are accepted by state, provincial, and territorial authorities – and you’ll learn how the evaluation can be applied to products like yours through a case study.
