Definition of hazardous locations

According to definitions in the Canadian Electrical Code, U.S. National Electrical Code, IEC 60079-10 and CENELEC EN 60079-10, hazardous locations are defined when fire or explosion may result from the presence of:

  • Flammable gases, vapors or liquids (known as Class I)
  • Combustible dusts (Class II)
  • Ignitable fibers or flyings (Class III)

National codes and standards require that electrical equipment used in locations with these conditions be designed and tested to help reduce the incidence of explosions.
